Description of key information

5-Chlorovaleryl chloride is expected to rapidly hydrolyse in contact with water to form 5-chlorovaleric acid (CAS 1119-46-6) and hydrogen chloride (CAS 7647-01-0). No further hydrolysis of 5-chlorovaleric acid is to be expected as it does not contain hydrolysable functional groups.

Additional information

Hydrolyissi</font>

No experimental data on the hydrolysis of 5 -chlorovaleryl chloride is available. For the acid chlorides category, hydrolysis is the primary reaction in aqueous systems and has been shown to occur very quickly with half-lives of ≤ 30 min (OECD SIDS, 2008). All category members hydrolyze in the presence of water or moisture to form hydrochloric acid (CAS 7647 -01 -0) and the corresponding organic acid. In the case of 5 -chlorovaleryl chloride the corrsponding organic acid is 5 -chlorovaleric acid (CAS 1119 -46 -6) which at its turn is considered to be hydrolytically stable as it does not contain hydrolysable functional groups.
