Description of key information
An acute dermal irritation study was performed on Bromochloromethane using New Zinland white rabbits (A single 4 hours semi-occluded application to the intact rabbit skin. hardened dark brown/black coloured scab and scar tissue were observed. Bromochloromethane is considered as corrosiveto rabbit skin.
An acute eye irritation study was performed on 6 male rabbits. Grading of eye irritation was according to the scale of Draize and the Illustrated Guide for Grading Eye Irritation published by the F.D.A. Scoring method was that of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Federal Register vol. 38, No. 187, 1500.42. Since two out of the six animals tested exhibited a positive reaction, the test was repeated using a group of six different rabbits. The second test was considered positive since three animals out of six tested exhibited positive reactions.

Additional information
A study was performed to assess the irritancy potential of Bromochloromethane to the skin of New Zealand white rabbits (1997). Dermal corrosion was observed as hardened dark brown/black colored-scab and scar tissue (a single 4-hour semi occluded application to intact 6 rabbits skin).
An eye irritation study on CBM was not performed since the test material produced corrosive effects in the skin irritation study (Project Number 466/161) in at least 1 animal.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Results from the skin irritation study indicate that CBM is corrosive to skin and as such it is assumed that the test material would produce similar severe effects in an eye irritation study. Therefore this substance was self classified according to Directive 67/548/EEC as Corrosive (C), R34 – Causes burns.
Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP) the substance is self classified as: Skin Corr. 1B, H314 – Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
