First-aid measures

General advice

Consult a physician. Show  this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Inhalation:

Remove victim from area of exposure - avoid becoming a casualty. Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remaining clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Keep at rest until fully recovered. If patient finds breathing difficult and develops a bluish discolouration of the skin (which suggests a lack of oxygen in the blood - cyanosis), ensure airways are clear of any obstruction and have a qualified person give oxygen through a face mask. Apply artificial respiration if patient is not breathing. Seek immediate medical advice.

Skin Contact:

If skin or hair contact occurs, immediately remove any contaminated clothing and wash skin and hair thoroughly with running water. If swelling, redness, blistering or irritation occurs seek medical assistance.

Eye Contact:

If in eyes, hold eyelids apart and flush the eye continuously with running water. Continue flushing until advised to stop by a Poisons Information Centre or a doctor, or for at least 15 minutes.

Ingestion:

Rinse mouth with water. If swallowed, give a glass of water to drink. If vomiting occurs give further water. Seek immediate medical assistance.

Medical attention and special treatment:

Treat symptomatically.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media

Suitable Extinguishing Media:

Normal foam, dry agent (carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder).

Unsuitable Extinguishing Media:

Water.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Substance liable to spontaneous combustion. Highly flammable vapour (carbon disulphide). Steam pipes may ignite carbon disulphide. Eliminate all ignition sources including cigarettes, open flames, spark producing switches/tools, pilot lights, heaters, naked lights, mobile phones etc. when handling. Earth containers when dispensing fluids. May also evolve carbon oxides and sulphur oxides when heated to decomposition.

Advice for firefighters and special protective equipment:

Avoid all ignition sources. Heating can cause expansion or decomposition of the material, which can lead to the containers exploding. If safe to do so, remove containers from the path of fire. Decomposes on heating emitting toxic fumes, including those of oxides of sulfur . Fire fighters to wear self-contained breathing apparatus and suitable protective clothing if risk of exposure to products of decomposition.

Further information

Pelletized xanthates are relatively stable if kept dry and cool. Store in closed containers in a cool, well ventilated area away from sources of heat or ignition.

Hazchem Code: 1Y

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Use personal protective equipment. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing vapors, mist or gas. Ensure adequate ventilation. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Avoid breathing dust.

Environmental precautions

Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not let product enter drains. Discharge into the environment must be avoided.

Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up

Wear protective equipment to prevent skin and eye contact and breathing in vapours/dust. DO NOT allow material to get wet. Air-supplied masks are recommended to avoid inhalation of toxic material. Vacuum solid spills instead of sweeping.

Collect and seal in properly labelled containers or drums for disposal. Use non-sparking tools.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling:

Avoid skin and eye contact and breathing in dust. In common with many organic chemicals, may form flammable dust clouds in air.

Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Keep away from sources of ignition

- No smoking. Take measures to prevent the build up of electrostatic charge.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated place and out of direct sunlight Avoid contact with heat, moist air, and water. Store away from sources of heat or ignition. Keep dry - reacts with water, may lead to drum rupture. Keep containers closed when not in use - check regularly for spills.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Technical protection measures

-Technical conditions and measures:

-Containment: enclosure and automation of mixing process as far as possible and contain area around mixing tank to ensure that exposure level is at acceptable level (PROC4, PROC21, PROC3, PROC2, PROC14, PROC23, PROC24,PROC25, PROC15, PROC8b).

-Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) in mixing step regarding the exposure to carbon disulphide via inhalation route.

-General ventilation: Regarding exposure via inhalation route and hazard from the substance Good general ventilation (3 – 5 air changes per hour) is sufficient to keep the exposure via inhalation at acceptable level. Monitoring of CS2 emissions from the mixing area and during cleaning and maintenance are recommended when applicable

Organisational measures:

-Environmental, health and safety guidelines or written instructions on the standard operating procedure (SOP) are utilized

-Occupational health and safety management system: basic / advanced

-Environment, health and safety (EHS) responsibilities are defined and assigned in writing

-Emergency action plans (Rescue training for accidental emissions) are created

-Personnel are trained in environment, health and safety issues, i.e. in safe handling of chemicals and good housekeeping

-Good hygiene measures practiced

-It is assumed that a comprehensive PPE program is implemented including selection, fit testing, training in use, maintenance and recording, as appropriate

-Exposure should be controlled primarily by avoidance of contact with the substance, for instance by limiting duration of activity, minimization of manual phases and by minimization of staff exposed

Appropriate engineering controls:

Ensure ventilation is adequate and that air concentrations of decomposition product(s) is/are controlled below quoted Exposure Standards. Avoid generating and breathing in dusts. Use with local exhaust ventilation or while wearing dust mask. Keep containers closed when not in use.

Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands before breaks and at the end of workday.

Personal protective equipment:

Eye/face protection

Safety glasses with side-shields conforming to EN166 Use equipment for eye protection tested

and approved under appropriate government standards such as NIOSH (US) or EN 166(EU).

Skin protection

Handle with gloves. Gloves must be inspected prior to use. Use proper glove removal technique (without touching glove's outer surface) to avoid skin contact with this product. Dispose of contaminated gloves after use in accordance with applicable laws and good laboratory practices.

Wash and dry hands.

The selected protective gloves have to satisfy the specifications of EU Directive 89/686/EEC and the standard EN 374 derived from it.

Body Protection

Complete suit protecting against chemicals, The type of protective equipment must be selected

according to the concentration and amount of the dangerous substance at the specific workplace.

Respiratory protection

For nuisance exposures use type P95 (US) or type P1 (EU EN 143) particle respirator. For higher

level protection use type OV/AG/P99 (US) or type ABEK-P2 (EU EN 143) respirator cartridges.

Use respirators and components tested and approved under appropriate government standards

such as NIOSH (US) or CEN (EU).

Occupational Exposure Limits:

No value assigned for this specific material by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission. However, Exposure Standard(s) for decomposition product(s):

Carbon disulfide: 8hr TWA = 31 mg/m3 (10 ppm), Sk

As published by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission. TWA - The time-weighted average airborne concentration over an eight-hour working day, for a five-day working week over an entire working life.

`Sk' Notice - absorption through the skin may be a significant source of exposure. The exposure standard is invalidated if such contact should occur.

These Exposure Standards are guides to be used in the control of occupational health hazards. All

atmospheric contamination should be kept to as low a level as is workable. These exposure standards should not be used as fine dividing lines between safe and dangerous concentrations of chemicals. They are not a measure of relative toxicity.

STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Stability: Stable under normal ambient and anticipated storage and handling conditions of temperature and pressure.

Reactivity

Reacts exothermically with water.

Possibility of hazardous reactions

Reacts exothermically with water. Heating can cause expansion or decomposition of the material, which can lead to the containers exploding.

Conditions to avoid

Avoid exposure to moisture. Avoid exposure to heat, sources of ignition, and open flame.

Incompatible materials

Strong oxidizing agents, acidic material and high temperatures.

Hazardous decomposition products

Carbon disulfide; carbon monoxide; carbon dioxide; oxides of sulfur (includes sulfur di and tri oxides)

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Product

Offer surplus and non-recyclable solutions to a licensed disposal company. Dissolve or mix the material with a combustible solvent and burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber.

Waste disposal

- Segregate floor sweepings of xanthates. Dispose of immediately. Dissolve in high pH water, and reuse if possible. Do not cross contaminate with oxidizing agents or acids. Xanthates will smolder or cause an open fire.

-   Empty bags should be disposed of as hazardous waste. Consult local regulations.

- Empty plywood/reconstituted particle boards comprising the xanthate boxes are usually recycled or burned as general refuse. If recycled, the metal reinforcements on the corners should be removed prior to sending to a recycling facility. Consult local authorities for proper disposal guidelines.

Contaminated packaging

Dispose of as unused product.
