Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Absorption by oral and dermal route, low bioaccumulation potential and fast excretion by urine.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Absorption

Based on its low molecular weight (202.63), solubility in water (5.471 g/l at T= 20°C) and log Kow between  -1 and 4 (1.23) Chlorphenesin is expected to be absorbed by gastrointestinal tract and by dermal route. The easily absorption of Chlorphenesin by oral route, by intraperitoneal injection and by skin is confirmed in the metabolism studies available on the substance. Respiratory absorption is unlikely.

Distribution

Based on its water solubility and Log Kow=1.23 there is no concern regarding potential bioaccumulation of the substance ( threshold value for bioaccumulation alert is 4).

Metabolism

According to the QSAR prediction confirmed by in vivo metabolism studies on rats and dogs, the substance is mostly transformed in oxidation products (i.e. 3-p-chlorophenoxylactic acid and p-chlorophenoxyacetic acid) or other products of conjugate reaction on both chlorphenol and chlorphenesin.

Excretion

Due to the high water solubility of the substance after oral and dermal absorption Chlorphenesin is rapidly excreted in the urine.
