Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No spontaneous ignition.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The substance is produced and regularly used for many years in Europe, transported in various conditions and in various amounts. Evidence connected to the long experience in handling, use and transport of the substance confirms the non- self-ignition properties. Thus, the substance is expected to be an air-stable compound at room temperature over a prolonged period of time (days), without noticeable or undesirable reactions. The substance melts at 78.6 °C, its boiling point is 341.1 °C and it is not flammable (see respectively the endpoints 4.2, 4.3 and 4.13 of this IUCLID dossier).  Moreover based on Differential Termal Analysis curve no exothermic phenomena was observed till 350 °C. In conclusion, a potential for spontaneous ignition is not expected: the substance can be considered as a no-pyrophoric and no-self-heating solid because it is not liable to self-heat by reaction with air and without energy supply. In addition, the substance is soluble in water at room temperature, 5.471 g/l at T= 23°C. No reactions with water or emission of flammable gases have ever been noted. Furthermore, the test substance is used as preservative in cosmetic product included in annex VI of Cosmetic Regulation EC.n.1223/2009. Therefore, the substance is considered to be not classified as a substance that in contact with water may react generating flammable gases.
