Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Per multiple guideline tests, greater than 60 percent of 1,4-butanediol biodegraded in less than 7 days.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable
Type of water:
freshwater

Additional information

Guideline study results indicate the 1,4 -butanediol (BDO) undergoes rapid biodegradation in water. In an OECD 301C guideline study, BDO was readily biodegradable (METI, 1992) and, in an OECD 302B guideline study, BDO biodegraded rapidly and completely such that it can be classified as readily biodegradable (BASF, 1977).
