The growth or cell inhibition of 4-Nitrophenol to algae is described in various publications and has been extensively reviewed by international groups of experts, i.e. BUA report No. 75 (1992) and IPCS CICAD (2000). The duration of the tests, evaluated in the previously mentioned reports, varied from 6-192 hours and as test organisms the algae species Scenedesmus quadricauda (Bringmann & Kühn 1978), Scenedesmus subspicatus (Marquart et al. 1984, Geyer et al. 1985), Scenedesmus obliquus (Rosner & Kunze 1985) and Chlorella zofigiensis (Irmer et al. 1985), Chlorella vulgaris (Kramer et al. 1985) as well as marin species such as Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Skeletoma costatum (Madsen 1984) were used. The examined effects were inhibition of cell multiplication, inhibition of photosynthesis and inhibition of chlorophyll biosynthesis. For green algae, the EC50 values for the inhibition of cell multiplication or yield range, independent of test duration (6-192h), ranged from 2.3 to 32 mg/L (Rosner & Kunze 1985, Marquart et al. 1984, Geyer et al. 1985, Kramer et al. 1986). The 48h-EC50 value for the inhibition of chlorophyll biosynthesis was 10.4 mg/L (Irmer et al. 1985). The photosynthesis of marine algae was inhibited by 25-34 mg/L (6h-EC50 value; Madsen 1984).
