Anthracene-oil constituents comprise mainly of 3- ring aromatic compounds and to a lesser extent of PAHs with >= 4 rings.

These are not hydrolysable, since they contain no hydrolysable groups.

They are not readily biodegradable, but few of them are considered to be inherently biodegradable, e.g. phenanthrene, fluorene, acenaphthene.

They have a moderate to high bioaccumulation potential with individual BCF values in fish ranging above 500, several of them extending beyond 2000. On the other hand, experimental evidence and experience has demonstrated that PAH show no biomagnification in the food chain.

Adsorption to soil is supposed to vary according to individual soil adsorption coefficients, the estimates of which range from about 5 -6000 (fluorene, acenaphthene) via about 23000 (phenanthrene) to approximately 60 -90000 (fluoranthene, pyrene) for the key components.
