According to the read-across strategy document attached to this Chemical Safety Report (CSR), potassium allophonate quickly hydrolyses to urea in the environment. Therefore, read-across to urea is used to assess ecotoxicity. Urea is of inherently low toxicity and is rapidly assimilated into the nitrogen cycle by soil microorganisms; therefore, exposure is limited. Urea is of low phytotoxicity as it used as source of nitrogen in plant fertiliser. Supporting this, a study conducted on soy bean plants confirmed that urea is of low toxicity to plants. The limited data available indicate urea is of low toxicity to birds. Further, due to the rapid assimilation of urea in the environment by soil microorganisms, exposure to birds is unlikely.
