Conclusions:
The density of the test item has been determined to be 1.33 x 10E3 kg/m3 at 21.5 ± 0.5 °C.
Executive summary:

The determination was carried out using a gas comparison pycnometer, designed to be compatible with Method A3 Relative Density of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008 and Method 109 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995.

Principle of the Test

A sample cell of known volume is partially filled with an accurately weighed amount of the test item. The sample cell is filled with an inert gas at ambient pressure. A reference cell of known volume is pressurized with the inert gas and the pressure recorded. The two cells are then connected, and after equilibration, the resulting pressure is recorded.

The test item volume is calculated from the two pressure readings, assuming that the inert gas exhibits ideal gas behaviour. The density of the test item is then calculated from the known mass and the determined volume.

Performance of the Test

Calibration Procedure

A reference cell with the defined volume (Vref) was pressurised to a typical pressure in the range 16 to 20 psi and the pressure recorded (P1). Following this, the volume of the sample cell was added to the system, resulting in a reduction in pressure, which was also recorded (P2). The volume calibration of the reference cell and the sample cell was confirmed using a stainless steel calibration ball with known volume (Vcal). The test procedure as outlined above was repeated with the sample cell containing the calibrated ball (pressure readings P3and P4for the upper and lower pressure values, respectively).

Conclusion

The density of the test item has been determined to be 1.33 x 103kg/m3at 21.5 ± 0.5 °C.

From these four pressure readings, the volume of the reference cell (Vref) and of the sample cell (Vcell) was calculated as outlined in the data handling section. The temperature was monitored and recorded.

Both determinations were performed in triplicate.
