Description of key information
Appearance:
On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, Sodium naphthalene-1-sulphonate was determine to be a solid white powder.
Melting point:
The melting point determination of Sodium naphthalene-1-sulphonate (CAS No. 130-14-3) was done following OECD Guideline 102 and according to the metal block capillary method. The test was conducted in replicates and Mean melting temperature range was observed to be 302.8 - 306.1°C at 965.1 hPa.
Boiling Point:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid which melts above 300°C. Sodium naphthalene-1-sulphonate (CAS No. 130-14-3) melting temperature range was observed to be 302.8 - 306.1°C at 965.1 hPa.
Density:
The density of test item Sodium naphthalene-1-sulphonate (CAS No. 130-14-3)was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to the Test methods: Pour density and tapped density of powders” recommended in The International Pharmacopoeia, Fourth Edition, 2014 using bulk density apparatus. The mean pour density and tapped density of test item was observed to be 0.5157 g/cm³ and 0.6490 g/cm³at 25 °C and 966.1 hPa.
Particle size distribution:
The particle size distribution of sodium naphthalene-1-sulfonate was determined by granulometric analysis with rotap sieve shaker. The particle size distribution was determined to be in the range of 150 micron to 10 micron.
Vapour pressure:
the study does not need to be conducted because the melting point is above 300°C.Sodium naphthalene-1-sulphonate (CAS No. 130-14-3) melting temperature range was observed to be 302.8 - 306.1°C at 965.1 hPa.
Partition coefficient:
Based on the available data from modeling database EPI suite using the KOWWIN V1.68 program, the estimated logPOW of the test substancesodium naphthalene-1 -sulfonatewas-1.776.Based on this value, chemical sodium naphthalene-1 -sulfonate can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.
Water solubility:
The water solubilitydetermination of test item Sodium naphthalene-1-sulphonate;CAS No.130-14-3 was doneb spectrophotometric method. The water solubility was determine to be 496240 mg/L at 25°C.
Surface tension:
Based on the data from ACD labs, surface tension for sodium naphthalene-1-sulfonate was predicted to be 58.7 mN/m.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of Sodium naphthalene-1-sulphonate (CAS No. 130-14-3)was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was determined to be 227°C at 964.9hPa.
Auto flammability:
sodium naphthalene-1-sulfonate did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27 °C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that sodium naphthalene-1-sulfonate is not auto-flammable.
Flammability:
sodium naphthalene-1-sulfonate does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that 2sodium naphthalene-1-sulfonate is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus sodium naphthalene-1-sulfonate was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.
Explosiveness:
the study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties
Oxidizing properties:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance contains oxygen or halogen atoms which are chemically bonded only to carbon or hydrogen and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied.
pH :
The pH determination of test item Sodium naphthalene-1-sulphonate (CAS No 130-14-3) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v solution was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 6.00 at 25 °C.
