- Conclusions:
- The substance Calcium carbide instantly hydrolyses to the decomposition products Ca(OH)2 and C2H2. Therefore, the assessment is based on these decomposition products. Interpretation of results: soluble (1000-10000 mg/L)
The solubility of acetylene in water is 1200 mg/L at 20 °C and pH 7. - Executive summary:
The substance Calcium carbide instantly hydrolyses to the decomposition products Ca(OH)2 and C2H2. Therefore, the assessment is based on these decomposition products. The solubility of acetylene in water as reported in the CRC Handbook of Aqueous Solubility Data is 1200 mg/L at 20 °C and pH 7.
This information is used in a read-across approach in the assessment of the target substance. For justification of read-across please refer to the read-across report attached to IUCLID section 13.

Description of key information
As calcium carbide instantly hydrolyses to the decomposition products Ca(OH)2 and C2H2, the assessment is based on these decomposition products. The water solubility for Ca(OH)2 and C2H2 is 1600 mg/L at 20 °C and 1200 mg/L at 20 °C and pH 7, respectively.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Water solubility:
- 1 200 mg/L
- at the temperature of:
- 20 °C
Additional information
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, point 7.7, the water solubility study does not need to be conducted as the substance is hydrolytically unstable (half-life less than 12 hours). The substance instantly hydrolyses in contact with water, yielding the decomposition products Ca(OH)2 and C2H2. Therefore, the assessment is based on these decomposition products and the respective values of water solubility for Ca(OH)2 and C2H2 are reported in this section.
The water solubility for Ca(OH)2 and C2H2 is 1600 mg/L at 20 °C and 1200 mg/L at 20 °C and pH 7, respectively.
The water solubility of acetylene is chosen as the key value in the chemical safety assessment (environment) since calcium hydroxide is considered to be of no environmental concern (neutralisation in buffered environmental media, calcium being a ubiquitous and essential mineral element).
This information is used in a read-across approach in the assessment of the target substance. For justification of read-across please refer to the read-across report attached to IUCLID section 13.
