Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

In aqueous systems, isovaleryl chloride (CAS 108-12-3) hydrolyses rapidly and forms HCl (CAS 7647-01-0) and isovaleric acid (CAS 503-74-2) (for details see section 5.1.2). Since there are neither experimental data available for isovaleryl chloride nor for its hydrolysis product isovaleric acid the toxicity is assessed via read across to the structurally similar substances isobutyryl chloride (CAS 79-30-1), isobutyric acid (CAS 79-31-2), valeryl chloride (CAS 638-29-9) and valeric acid (CAS 109-52-4).

Short-term toxicity to fish

Parent compound isovaleryl chloride: No data available.

Hydrolysis product isovaleric acid: No data available.

There are no experimental data available for the parent compound and its hydrolysis product, therefore the short-term toxicity to fish is assessed based the results of the structurally similar substance valeryl chloride and its hydrolysis product valeric acid.

Valeryl chloride: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish (96-h LC50 > 100 mg/L after pH-adjustment).

Valeric acid: Acutely harmful to fish (96-h LC50 = 54.8 mg/L, not neutralised)

Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely toxic to fish (pH dependent; 96-h LC50= 4.92 mg/L).

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Parent compound isovaleryl chloride: No data available.

Hydrolysis product isovaleric acid: No data available.

There are no experimental data available for the parent compound and its hydrolysis product, therefore the short-term toxicity to fish is assessed based the results of the structurally similar substance valeryl chloride and its hydrolysis product isobutyric acid.

Isobutyric acid: Acutely harmful to aquatic invertebrates (48-h EC50 = 51.25 mg/L).

Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely very toxic for aquatic invertebrates (pH dependent, 48-h EC50= 0.492 mg/L).

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Parent compound isovaleryl chloride: No data available.

Hydrolysis product isovaleric acid: No data available.

There are no experimental data available for the parent compound and its hydrolysis product, therefore the toxicity to algae is assessed based the results of the structurally similar substance isobutyric acid.

Isobutyric acid: Acutely harmful to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria (72-h ErC50 = 53.9 mg/L; NOEC = 31.3 mg/L).

Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely very toxic for aquatic organisms (pH dependent, 72-h ErC50= 0.492 mg/L).

Toxicity to microorganisms

Parent compound isovaleryl chloride: No data available.

Hydrolysis product isovaleric acid: No data available.

There are no experimental data available for the parent compound and its hydrolysis product, therefore the toxicity to microorganisms is assessed based the results of the structurally similar substance isobutyric acid.

Isobutyric acid: EC10 = 39 mg/L

Hydrolysis product HCl: No data available.
