All test fish were acclimated to laboratory conditions for at least ten days prior to use. Pulverized dry fish pellets were fed to all specimens. Water used in the static test was aerated deionized distilled water with 30 mg/l CaSO4, 30 mg/l MgSO4, 48 mg/l NaHCO3, and 2 mg/l KCL added.

Tests were conducted by placing 16 liters of reconstituted water in each vessel (Glass - 20 liter aquaria), aerating, then adding the fish. Fish loading requirements (<1.0 gm fish / liter water) limited the number of fish to 10 per vessel. If no deaths occurred in 24 hours, aeration was stopped and the test compound added with 1,500 mls of water for mixing, making a total of 17.5 liters. Any vessels containing dead fish were cleaned, reset, and observed for another 24 hours prior to compound addition. Constant temperature water troughs maintained the temperature +/- 2F.

Twenty fish were exposed to each concentration. Observations were made and recorded and dead fish removed daily at the same time for four days (96 hours).

A reference p,p' DDT toxicity was run for both species of fish.

The acute fish toxicity of Dowfax 3B-2 was run statically on a cold water species, the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, and on a warm water representative, the bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque, and via a flow-through system on another species, the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas Rafinesque.

Using Finney's method of probit analysis, the LC50 at 96 hours for rainbow trout is 5.02 rng/l; for bluegill, 4.99 mg/l; and for fathead minnows, 3.66 mg/l. The higher sensitivity exhibited by the fathead minnows is due primarily to the character of the flow-through test.
