Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the adsorption/desorption screening study (required in section 9.3.1) does not need to be conducted as the substance and its relevant degradation products decompose rapidly.
Ethylbenzene is readily biodegradable. Thus, derogation applies to adsorption/desorption testing.

Additional information

There were several studies reporting Koc values for ethylbenzene. The results indicated a log Koc = 3.12, Koc = 1331 for ethylbenzene when calculated using KOCWIN v2.0 (USEPA 2008).

This calculated value of log Koc of 3.12 compares favourably with the measured Koc value reported in a study by Szabo (1992). In this laboratory study they immobilized humic acid on aminopropylsilica and alumina and used this approach to study the contribution of the mineral phase upon the sorptive properties of soil humates for ethylbenzene. Under the conditions of the study, the results indicated log Koc = 2.41
