Additional information

Ethylbenzene is readily biodegradable and has a minimal potential for bioaccumulation.

Conclusion on classification

Acute (short-term) aquatic hazard:

 

Experimental data from acute toxicity studies show that the acute toxicity values are less than 10 mg/l (within the range 1-10 mg/l) for each of the three trophic levels. However as ethylbenzene is considered to be readily biodegradable it is not classified for acute toxic hazard under Directive 67/548/EEC.

 

Category 1 is the only acute toxic hazard for aquatic toxicity adopted by the EU CLP (Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008) but ethylbenzene does not meet this criterion for classification. UN GHS adopts four categories of acute aquatic toxicity; therefore in non-EU countries that adopt UN GHS, ethylbenzene would meet the criteria to be classified as Acute Aquatic Hazard Category 2.

 

Chronic (long-term) aquatic hazard: 

 

A 7-day study conducted with Ceriodaphnia dubia concluded a NOEC of 1.0 mg/l. Ethylbenzene is considered to be readily biodegradable. Therefore ethylbenzene has to be classified for chronic toxic hazard into Chronic category 3 (harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects).

 

Environmental fate (biodegradation/bioaccumulation):

 

The biodegradation of ethylbenzene has been assessed in a guideline study. The result of this study demonstrates that ethylbenzene is readily biodegradable. Ethylbenzene has a Log Kow of 3.6 but is not expected to bioaccumulate (see PBT/vPvB assessment).
