Description of key information

A short term toxicity test with Ceriodaphnia dubia exposed to ‘benzene, ethylenated, by-products from’ and conducted under GLPs, flow-through conditions, and following standard test guidelines (USEPA OPP 72-2), resulted in 48-hour LC50 value of 0.029 mg/L.

Six acute freshwater invertebrate studies were available for ‘benzene, ethylenated, by-products from’ with three considered reliable for assessment for this endpoint. One of the reliable studies was conducted with Ceriodaphnia dubia, one with Daphnia magna, and the other study was conducted with Chironomous tentans. The C. dubia study was conducted under flow-through conditions, followed standard test guidelines and GLPs, had measured test concentrations and resulted in a 48-hour LC50 value of 0.029 mg/L. The D. magna study was conducted under static-renewal conditions, used the water-accommodated fraction method to prepare the test solutions, followed standard test guidelines and GLPs, had measured test concentrations and resulted in a 48-hour EC50 value of 0.3 mg/L. The C. tentans study was conducted under flow-through conditions, followed standard test guidelines and GLPs, had measured test concentrations and resulted in a 96-hour EC50 value of 0.6 mg/L. Since the toxicity values from these reliable studies were from different species, the lower of the three values (48-hour LC50 value of 0.029 mg/L from the test with C. dubia) was selected as the key parameter for this endpoint.

The remaining 3 supporting studies (two with D. magna and one with C. dubia) were not considered reliable for assessment due to an unsuitable test design. The test substance has limited water solubility and is not stable in aqueous solution. These three studies were conducted under static conditions and with no measured verification of test concentrations. The reported 48 -hour LC50 values for the two D. magna studies were 0.77 mg/L and 1.1 mg/L, and the 48 -hour EC50 value for the C. dubia test was 0.17 mg/L.
