Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A freshwater algal toxicity test with Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata) exposed to 'benzene, ethylenated, by-products from' and conducted under GLPs and following OECD TG 201 resulted in a 72-hour growth rate EC50 (ErC50) and NOEC of 0.485 and 0.0959 mg/L, respectively.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.485 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.096 mg/L

Additional information

Two freshwater algal studies with Selenastrum capricornutum (new name: Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata) were available for ‘benzene, ethylenated, by-products from’, with only one considered for assessment for this endpoint. One study was conducted for 72 -hours under GLPs and following OECD Test Guideline 201. The study was considered the key study for this endpoint and concluded that the 72-hour growth rate EC50 (ErC50) and NOEC was 0.485 and 0.0959 mg/L, respectively. The second study was conducted for 96 hours under GLPs and followed standard U.S. EPA test guidelines; however results (EC50 values) were based only on cell counts rather than growth rate; therefore, since the ECHA guidance recommends endpoint values based on growth rate this study was considered a supporting study only.
