Description of key information
Additional information
A ready biodegradability study was conducted using a DOC die away study according to OECD 301 to investigate the aerobic degradability of Polyol TD. The DOC concentration was measured for each period (0, 7, 14,21 and 28 days) in each of inoculated flasks used for the test and control samples. According to OECD guidelines for testing chemicals, a test compound is regarded as easily biodegradable if the loss of DOC within 28 days is greater than 70 %. The pass value has to be reached in a 10-day window within the 28-day period of the test.
Under the terms of this study Polyol TD was not found to be readily biodegradable as DOC removal levels only reached levels less than 50% by the end of the 28 study period. As such Polyol TD cannot be assumed to be readily removed by biological processes in the STP, soil or sediment. Nonetheless in the study over 90% removal of DOC was observed in the test system after 35 days. This suggests that Reaction mass of 2-ethylpropane-1,3-diol(DMP) and 5-ethyl-1,3-dioxane-5-methanol(CTF) and propylidynetrimethanol(TMP) may possess a degree of biodegradability and could be inherently biodegradable.
In accordance with REACH Annex XI, based on available data, the substance is not classified as hazardous for the environment. Therefore degradation simulation testing in water and/or sediment and in soil do not need to be conducted.
