Under the conditions of the OECD 301F manometric respirometry test, octanolamine meets both the pass level (> 60% DO2) and 10-day window criteria for ready biodegradability. The tested substance was a hydrochloride salt of octanolamine, which has a measured acid dissociation constant (pKa) of 8.9 (Lin, 2007). Thus, the amino alcohol substance will occur primarily in its ionized (cationic) form at the circumneutral pH encountered in the environment; and the cationic (amine) and anionic (e.g. chloride) components of its salts are expected to be completely dissociated in dilute aqueous solutions. Should Octanolamine (free amine) substance be introduced to the aquatic environment, it would be neutralized by acids/buffers naturally present in surface waters; forming primarily the dissociated cationic species. Thus, both the pH-adjusted and free amine forms of Octanolamine can be regarded as “readily biodegradable”, and as such can be expected to rapidly and completely biodegrade in a variety of aerobic aquatic environments.
