Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 (specific rules for adaptation from column 1) point 9.2.2.1, Annex VIII of REACH (regulation EC 1907/2006), the study does not need to be conducted if the substance is highly insoluble in water. The water solubility was determined to be <0.4 g/L at 20 °C for Dioctyltin mercaptopropionate. For the read-across substance (dioctyltin oxide) it was technically not feasible to conduct the hydrolysis study, due to the maximum working level for the hydrolysis test being half the water solubility. In addition, no suitable analytical method is available. The only method for determining the quantity of test material present measures the quantity of tin in solution. This therefore has no indication for stability.

Read-across to DOTO (Dioctyltin oxide CAS No. 870 -08-6)

Supporting information is given in the study Yoder (2003). The study used a non-standard technique measuring the behaviour of dioctyltins in water by electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI/MS). The study was performed and reported to a high standard and as such was assigned a reliability score of 2 in line with the criteria for assessing data quality, as outlined in Klimisch (1997). Although DOTO was a point of interest in the study, the poor solubility in both water and suitable solvents meant that DOTO was not present at a detectable level, and it was not possible to use a surrogate substance to create standards. No conclusions on the hydrolysis of DOTO could be drawn from the available data.
