Description of key information

In accordance with Section 1.2 of REACH Annex XI, there is sufficient weight of evidence from several independent sources of information leading to the conclusion that Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether does not exert carcinogenic effects and thus does not have to be classified, because it has no genotoxic properties and additionally, a 14 day inhalation toxicity study in rats and a 14 day/13 week drinking water study in mice with the major metabolite 2-Methoxyethanol did not reveal any neoplastic observations.
It can therefore be concluded with sufficient certainty that Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether will not cause carcinogenic effects and that testing is not scientifically necessary

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Carcinogenicity: via oral route

Endpoint conclusion:
no study available

Justification for classification or non-classification

Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether does not have to be classified for carcinogenicity according to the criteria laid down in the EU Classification Labelling and Packaging Regulation (1272/2008/EC) because it has not genotoxic properties and carcinogenicity testing was considered not scientifically necessary.
