Following CLP, the substance is not to be classified as acutely hazardous to the aquatic environment. Based on the available acute and chronic data, the substance is not to be classified as chronically hazardous to the aquatic environment.
Rationale:
The substance is not to be classified as acutely hazardous to the aquatic environment, since the lowest acute effect value is >> 1 mg/L (algae: 72h-ErC50 =21.6 mg/L; NITE 2004).
Chronic data are available for daphnids and algae, therefore classification is based on the available chronic and acute toxicity data.
- Chronic toxicity data:
Chronic toxicity data are available for daphnids (21d-NOEC = 4.4 mg/L, NITE 2004) and algae (72h-ErC10 = 6.9 mg/L, NITE 2004; recalcluated by BASF SE, 2014). According to the criteria outlined in Table 4.1.0(b)(ii) (Commission Regulation (EU) No 286/2011 amending Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 for rapidly degradable substances) the substance is not to be classified as chronically hazardous to the aquatic environment.
- Acute toxicity data:
Fish is the trophic level which is not covered by chronic data. Therefore, classification is based on the respective acute data; for fish the 96h-LC50 was determined to be 31.6 mg/L and 224 mg/L based on not pH-adjusted and pH adjusted test solutions, respectively (BASF AG 1987, report no. 10F0432/865014). The effect values show a higher toxicity using non-neutralised test medium with regard to the LC50; therefore, part of the observed toxicity is caused by the pH change induced by the substance. For classification/labeling purposes the effect data for the neutralised test medium should be used since the quantities of the substance that would be found in natural waters are not likely to affect the pH to a relevant extent. It is likely that the LC50 value from the test without neutralisation overestimates the potential toxicity of these matrices.
The substance is readily biodegradable (BASF SE 2012, report no. 29G0286/05G008; BASF SE 2019, report no. 22G0286/05G024, 22G0286/05G025); the log Kow is <4 (log Kow = 1.86; BASF AG 1993, report no. 93P00886.07).
According to the criteria outlined in Table 4.1.0(b) (iii) (Commission Regulation (EU) No 286/2011 amending Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008) the substance is not to be classified as chronically hazardous to the aquatic environment.
Conclusion:
Based on the available acute and chronic toxicity data, the substance is not to be classified as acutely or chronically hazardous to the aquatic environment.
