Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The lowest NOEC of 5 mg V/kg food was observed in a 4-weeks study on the effect of food spiked with NH4VO3 on body weight of Gallus domesticus (Cervantes and Jensen, 1986; Klimisch 2).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Long-term EC10, LC10 or NOEC for birds:
5 mg/kg food

Additional information

Read-across

Slags, steelmaking, vanadium is a sparingly soluble UVCB substance that upon dissolution may release minor amounts of vanadium and insignificant amounts of other elements. Thus, regarding the environmental toxicity (if any), vanadium is the moiety of concern. Several reliable studies (all Klimisch 2) are available for the chronic toxicity (exposures between 2 and 20 weeks) of 4 V substances (VOSO4, Ca3(VO4)2, NH4VO3 and NaVO3) to mortality, body weight or reproduction of 3 bird species (Anas platyrhynchos, Gallus domesticus, Coturnix coturnix japonica). The NOEC values vary between 5 and ≥300 mg V/kg diet. Reliable toxicity data for birds do not differ significantly among vanadium substances tested: ≥110 mg V/kg diet for VOSO4, 20 - 50 mg V/kg diet for Ca3(VO4)2, 5 - ≥300 mg V/kg diet for NH4VO3 and a LOEC of 20 mg V/kg diet for NaVO3. All results are based on the total elemental V concetration in food.
