Description of key information

In accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex VII, section 2, the chemical structure of lithium bis(oxalato)borate does not contain chemical groups, which may lead to the conclusion that the test substance has oxidizing properties. Therefore the oxidising properties test (as required in Section 7.13) does not have to be conducted (refer to Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7a).
Despite of this waiver statement the oxidising properties of lithium bis(oxalato)borate were also assessed in a study in order to verify the statement. It was found that lithium bis(oxalato)borate mixed with saw dust does not keep on burning after ignition and shows therefore no oxidising properties.

Additional information

A test to assess the oxidising properties of lithium bis(oxalato)borate has been conducted according to EU method A.17. The test item was blended with saw dust in a proportion of 2:1 and piled as cone. After ignition the pile did not keep on burning. It can be concluded that lithium bis(oxalato)borate has no oxidising properties. (Guizhou, 2011)

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the chemical structure and to a study that has been assessed, lithium bis(oxalato)borate does not have to be classified and labelled according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
