Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation 1907/2006/EC Annex VII, the determination of surface tension (required in section 7.6) only needs to be conducted if surface activity is expected or can be predicted. Lithium bis(oxalato)borate as such does not exist in water but hydrolyses*). The resulting ions (lithium cation, bis(oxalato)borate anion, and the postulated degradation products: lithium hydrogen oxalate, the complex C2HBO5, oxalic acid, and boric acid) are quite small and do not comprise surface active components unifying hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. Moreover, lithium bis(oxalato)borate is a conduct agent and surface activity is not a desired property of the material. Thus, the performance of a study on surface tension at 1 g/L (OECD guideline 115) is scientifically not reasonable.
*) Lithium bis(oxalato)borate is water soluble whereas precise data cannot be determined due to hydrolysis of the substance (study result: >=507 g/L and lower than 1015 g/L).
