Two GLP guideline studies investigating the ready biodegradability of 1,2,3-Propanetriol, homopolymer, diisooctadecanoate (CAS 63705-03-3) are available. The key study (Schwarz, 2012) was performed according to OECD 301B under aerobic conditions using activated sludge as inoculum. A mean biodegradation of 79% (CO2 evolution) was observed after 28 d. However, the 10-day window was not achieved. Since 1,2,3-Propanetriol, homopolymer, diisooctadecanoate is a UVCB substance and consists of structurally similar constituents with esters of mono-, di- and triesters of glycerol, diglycerol and triglycerol and C18iso fatty acid, sequential (instead of concurrent) biodegradation of the individual structures can occur, but all constituents can be considered as readily biodegradable. Thus, referring to Annex I to the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals ‘Revised introduction to the OECD guidelines for testing of chemicals, section 3’ (OECD, 2006), the 10-day window should not be considered for this UVCB substance and due to a degradation of >60 % within 28 days the substance can be regarded as readily biodegradable. The supporting study (Fletcher, 1997) was performed under aerobic conditions using secondary effluent from an unacclimatised activated sludge plant as inoculum. The biodegradation was 42.6% and 48.9% after 28 days for the replicates. As the key study fulfills the criteria for ready biodegradability, 1,2,3-Propanetriol, homopolymer, diisooctadecanoate is considered to be readily biodegradable according to the OECD criteria.
