Additional information

No studies investigating the short-term toxicity of sodium methylparaben (CAS No. 5026-62-0) to aquatic invertebrates are available. Therefore, toxicity data of the corresponding acid methylparaben (CAS No. 99-76-3) are used as read across.

This read across approach is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Grouping of substance and read across approach as is explained within the analogue justification in section 13. Except for different cations (hydrogen vs. sodium) the anions of both the source and target substance have identical chemical structures. Since dissociation of the sodium salt under environmental conditions (pH 4 - 9) yields the same ionic species as the acidic form of the substance, this read across can be considered as justified.

For the short-term toxicity of the analogue read across substance methylparaben towards aquatic invertebrates three studies are available. The key study was carried out according to ISO 634115 and is published in a peer reviewed publication by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Madsen et al., 2001). Daphnia magna was exposed for 48 h under static conditions. Information on analytical measurements is not included in the report. An EC50 (48 h) of 11.2 mg/L is reported. This value was used for assessment.

The first supporting study is a publication about the acute toxicity of benzoic acids to Daphnia magna (Kamaya et al., 2005). Testing with methylparaben was carried out similar to OECD guideline 202 including analytics, but no details on measured concentration values are given. An EC50 (48 h) of 41.1 mg/L based on nominal concentrations is reported.

As additional supporting study results from a publication by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (Anon., 1999) are included. Testing with daphnids was carried out according to OECD guideline 202, no further details are available. The reported EC 50 (48 h) is 36 mg/L.
