The acute toxicity of 2,2-bis(methylthio)propane to Danio rerio has been investigated through two OECD Guideline 203 (Shen, 2008 & Gancet, 2008). Both studies are valid, but the one from Gancet (2008) is considered as the key study due to the lowest LC50 determined and to GLP conditions. In this study, the mortality of fish was determined in a semi-static 96-hour test. As the concentrations were not maintained within 80% of the initial measured concentrations, the exposure concentration was equivalent to the geometric mean between the measured concentration of the initial fresh solution and the one of the same solution, measured after 24 hours of test: the LC50 -96h was 19 mg/L. According to Shen (2008) the 96h-LC50 was 32 mg/L. This value was based on the mean measured test substance concentrations. In addition, the prolonged toxicity of bismethylthiopropane to Danio rerio has been investigated through OECD guideline 204 and according to GLP requirements in a semi-static test with 24h test medium renewal (Zhao, 2012). The nominal concentrations of the treatment groups were 0.1, 0.3, 0.9, 2.7 and 8.1 mg/L. The variations of measured concentrations of the test substance were all less than 20 percent of the nominal concentrations. The test results showed that the threshold level of lethal effect and observed effects of the test substance on zebra fish in 14 d was 8.1 mg/L (measured concentration 9.00 mg/L). Nevertheless, the selected key value for fish is the data from Gancet (2008) which has been performed on a 96h exposure period in accordance with the duration mentioned in the CLP regulation for the fish test.
