Self-ignition in the Grewer oven

In the investigation of self-ignition in the Grewer oven, the pure test item showed a self-heating which started at 160 °C and led to a maximum temperature of 460 °C.

Bowes-Cameron-Cage Test (UN-Test N.4) - 140 °C, 100 mm cube sample

The temperature in the centre of the sample exceeded the oven temperature of about 15 K within approximately 9 hours, but showed a temperature increase lower than 60 °C within 24 hours.

Due to the negative result in the 100 mm cube sample at an oven temperature of 140 °C no further tests had to be performed.

Conclusions:
Test item is not classified as self-heating substance, according to CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Executive summary:

The self-ignition behavior of the product was determined in the oven according to VDI 2263. For this purpose, the test item was filled in a small wire basket of a volume of 8 cm³ and this wire-basket was placed into the oven. The temperature of the oven was increased with a constant heating rate (1.2 K/min) and the temperature of the sample monitored. The self-ignition behavior of the pure test item was investigated. In the Grewer Oven test, the pure test item showed a self-heating which started at 160 °C and led to a maximum temperature of 460 °C, therfore the self-ignition of the substance was further investigated by Bowes-Cameron-Cage Test (UN-Test N.4).

The tests were performed in a hot-air circulating type oven with an inner volume of 53 l. The internal temperature of the oven at 140 °C was controlled with an accuracy of ± 2 °C. The temperature was measured in the center of the sample cube and between the sample container and the second stainless steel cage.

Conclusion

The test item is not classified as self-heating substance, according to CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
