Testing for this endpoint has been waived in accordance with Annex XI, 1.2 and 1.3 as an experiment is considered scientifically unjustified. The waiving bases on handling experience, experimental data from the supporting substance ferric sulphate and structure-activity considerations.

In previous reviews of inorganic soluble iron salts (e.g. OECD 2007), statements such as “The substance does not contain elements such as carbon and hydrogen necessary for auto flammability/ flammability in air” have been made. Flammability is not expected to be a significant hazard for water soluble iron salts.

The likelihood of pyrophoric properties and flammability on contact with water can generally be negated on the basis of functional groups present, the handling experience and particularly as iron(III) salts are marketed as watery solutions.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The following statement bases on DSD, the Commission Directive 2001/59/EC (28th ATP of Council Directive 67/548/EEC), and CLP (5th ATP of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council) as implementation of UN-GHS in the EU:
