Description of key information

The test was conducted on activated sludge in accordance with OECD 209 (Activated sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test) and was performed to GLP standard. Two criteria must be met in order to consider the test valid; 1) the respiration rate for the two blank controls must be within 15% of one another and 2) the EC50 of the reference substance 3,5-DCP must be in the range of 5 to 30 mg/L. The controls were within 9.6% of one another and the EC50 for the reference substance was 18.6 mg/L. Therefore this test may be considered valid.

The oxygen consumption rates for the test substance at the 5, 25 and 50 mg/l concentrations exhibited an oxygen consumption rate higher than the mean of the controls, thus no inhibition was measured.  The 1 and 10 mg/l concentrations exhibited slightly lower oxygen consumption rates than the mean of the controls, equivalent to percent inhibitions of 5.5 and 7.4 respectively.

The standard deviation for the mean of the controls is 2.55 mg/O2/L/hr. Data which fall within a range of two standard deviations from the mean of the controls are not statistically different from the mean. The range is equivalent to 32.34-42.54 mg/O2/L/hr. Since the oxygen consumption rates of the 1 and 10 mg/L concentrations fall within this range, these concentrations are not statistically different from the mean oxygen consumption rate of the controls. Therefore statistically there was no inhibition of the respiration rate from the test substance to the prepared sludge sample at all the concentrations tested.
