Description of key information

The analysis of Acacia mearnsi extract, indicated acute toxicity to Skeletonema costatum with a EC50 (72h) of 7.4 mg/L, under test conditions. However, this substance is not classified, according to the criteria given in Annex I of Regulation EC/1272/2008, as hazardous aquatic acute nor chronic.

Additional information

One GLP-compliant study is available on Acacia mearnsi extract and it is quoted as reliability 1 according to Klimisch criteria, flagged as a key study. The analysis of Acacia mearnsi extract, indicated acute toxicity to Skeletonema costatum with a LC50 (72h) of 7.4 mg/L (based on biomass) under test conditions.

Second study is not GLP compliant but follows the guideline of the USEPA 2002 - Green alga: Test Method (1003.0 EPA/821 - R-02-013). It is quoted as reliability 2 according to klimisch criteria, flagged as a supporting study. The analysis of Acacia mearnsi extract, indicated acute toxicity to Selenastrum capricornutum with a LC50 (96h) of 12.77 ppm (based on growth rate) under test conditions.

For both studies, according to the criteria given in Annex I of Regulation EC/1272/2008, this substance is not classified as hazardous aquatic acute nor chronic (because EC50 (72h) > 1 mg/L and the substance Acacia mearnsi extract is readily biodegradable)
