Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Read-across conclusions for the following properties under consideration

The basis for the read-across concept for this project is the equilibrium between sulfates, hydrogensulfates, and sulfuric acid in aqueous solutions depending on pH value which is clearly described in published literature and summarised in the following equations:

H2SO4<-> HSO4-+ H+      HSO4-<-> H++ SO42-

As the nature of the cation should make no significant difference in this case concerning toxicity and solubility (all compounds are very soluble in water), only the chemical and biological properties of the anion are considered relevant. Based on the described equilibrium correlations, we propose unrestricted read-across between the groups of sulfates, hydrogensulfates and sulfuric acid concerning systemic toxicity.

The proposed read-across concept only applies to toxicological and ecotoxicological/environmental fate endpoints.

Sodium hydrogensulfate has been tested in one in-vivo skin irritation and one in-vivo eye irritation study. The test for skin irritation properties shows a negative response, whereas the test on eye irritation indicates corrosive potential.

Thus, potassium hydrogensulfate does not require classification as skin irritant, but has to be classified as irritant to the eye.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Skin irritation:

Potassium hydrogensulfate:

no study available.

Sodium hydrogensulfate (read-across substance):

One key study for sodium hydrogensulfate according to OECD 404 is available which describes the test item as not irritating to the skin.

Based on the outcome of this study, sodium hydrogensulfate is considered as not irritating to the skin.

Eye irritation:

Potassium hydrogensulfate:

no study available.

Sodium hydrogensulfate (read-across substance):

One in-vivo study for sodium hydrogensulfate according to OECD guideline 405 is available. This study conducted in one animal showed that sodium hydrogensulfate is a serious eye irritant.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Skin irritation:

Based on the results of the study performed in accordance with OECD 404, it can be concluded, that sodium hydrogensulfate is not irritating to the skin and has not to be classified according to EC Regulation No. 1272/2008 and subsequent regulations.

Applying the read-across concept described in the "additional information" field, it can safely be assumed that potassium hydrogensulfate is not skin irritating and does not require classification according to EC Regulation No. 1272/2008 and subsequent regulations.

Eye irritation:

According to the EC Regulation No. 1272/2008 and subsequent regulations, the test item sodium hydrogensulfate is classified as Category 1.

Applying the read-across concept described in the "additional information" field, the substance potassium hydrogensulfate is an eye irritant and requires classification according to EC Regulation No. 1272/2008 and subsequent regulations, category 1.
