- In a category approach, read-across is used among a number of structurally similar/identical substances, i.e. soluble sulfate substances. The structural similarity is based on the fact that the common (eco)toxicological moiety of concern is the sulfate anion which is formed under environmental conditions or a pH dependent sulfate/hydrogensulfate mixture formed under physiological conditions (e.g. stomach, Scheme 1).
Within this category, because of the structural similarity, the specified toxicological and ecotoxicological properties are similar.
The similarity rules specified in Annex XI, Section 1.5 of the REACH Regulation in the REACH Guidance on IR & CSA, Chapter R.6 of apply and the category ” hydrogensulfates” is formed.
