Description of key information

Due to the high volatility of the substance, an Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition Test according to OECD Guideline 209 was technically not feasible. Therefore, the toxicity of the substance to microorganisms was assessed by inhibition control assays of a ready biodegradation test with the substance according to OECD Guideline 310. The study has demonstrated that the substance has no toxic potential to microorganisms up to a concentration of 33 mg/L. Thus, the substance is not considered inhibitory to microorganisms.

Additional information

According to OECD Guideline 209, volatile substances cannot be tested adequately unless special precautions are taken. In a GLP-compliant Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition assay according to OECD Guideline 209 (BASF SE, 2017), which was aerated with air during incubation, eliminition of the test item was about 98 % of TOC after 3 hours. In a GLP-compliant Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition assay according to OECD Guideline 209 (BASF SE, 2017), which was stirred during incubation, elimination of the test item was about 96 % of TOC after 3 hours. Thus, it is technically not feasible to test 1,1-diethoxyethane in the Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition Test because the test item is highly volatile at the test conditions.

In a valid ready biodegradability test according to OECD Guideline 310, inhibition control assays (29 replicates) were performed in order to check the toxic effect of the test item (BASF SE, 2017; reference 5.2.1-1). The study has demonstrated that the substance has no toxic potential to microorganisms up to a concentration of 33 mg/L. Therefore, microbial respiration was not found to be significantly inhibited at the concentration tested.
