Description of key information

A few pre-guideline studies in animals were available for this evaluation demonstrating that the test material is highly irritating to the skin and eye and confirmed with some basic evaluations in humans.

Additional information

Experimental studies in animals and humans showed that crotonaldehyde causes skin irritation and serious damage to the eyes. No studies were identified regarding respiratory irritation. However, acute inhalation toxicity studies suggested that crotonaldehyde causes irritation to the nose and respiratory tract in rats (Eastman Kodak, 1961).

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the criteria in regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, as well as the requirements of Annex VI thereof, the substance is classified as skin irritant Catergory 2 and eye damage Category 1.
