Guideline:
OECD Guideline 203 (Fish, Acute Toxicity Test)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Leuciscus idus f. melanotus were exposed to the substance in aerated glas test vessels (40 x 25 x 30 cm) containing 20 L test medium under controlled conditions and a 12 h light/dark cycle for 96 h. 65 h prior to exposure begin 10 fish were placed into each test vessel. Then, test substance was added and water quality parameters were measured regularly. The fish were regularly inspected throughout the test. At test end, the fish were harvested, dissected and macroscopically analysed.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

There are no studies available investigating the effects of the target substance Polyaldo 2 -1 -IS (CAS 73296 -86 -3) on freshwater fish. However, there is one study available for the main constituent Di(isooctadecanoic) acid, diester with oxydi(propanediol) (CAS 67938-21-0), which is considered reasonable to cover this endpoint adequately (see read-across justification in IUCLID section 13).

The key study was not performed according to a guideline but the methods are comparable to OECD 203. Leuciscus idus melanotus was exposed to four loading rates in the range of 1 to 500 mg/L (nominal) under static conditions and a 12 h light/dark cycle. The temperature was held at 20 ± 1 °C using a water bath. Mortality and behaviour were recorded at regular intervals and were compared to the negative control at the end of the test.

No mortality was observed after 96 h. Behavioral abnormalities were only observed after 24 h in fish exposed to the highest tested concentration of 500 mg/L, which swam at the water surface. Dissection of the fish after test termination did not reveal any macroscopic changes. The derived LC50 (96 h) was > 500 mg/L.

Based on the available result from one structurally related source substance (in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is a main constituent of the target substance, it can be concluded that the effect concentrations of Reaction product of Isooctadecanoic acid, ester with oxybis[propanediol] (CAS 73296-86-3) will be in the same range.
