Skin irritation/corrosion
No data is available for skin irritation of 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA).
Some concern for skin irritation of 6-CHMA is expected based on the similarity with short chain alkyl methacrylates and in particular with 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate CAS 688-84-6 (see document "Read -across hypothesis and justification" in section 13 of this IUCLID dossier). As reported in SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004), these chemicals are all typically irritating to the skin of rabbits when applied under occluded conditions and upon prolonged contact. In particular, experimental data are available for the most similar short chain alkyl methacrylates 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (2-EHMA) CAS 688-84-6. In SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004) inside the specific section of 2 -EHMA a study conducted in 1977 according to FDA, Draizen method is reported: 2-EHMA was moderately irritating based on primary irritation index of 3.12 (Ref. Sterner and Stiglic, 1977, 2-Ethylhexyl methacrylate: Prüfung von "Äthylhexylmethacrylat" auf primäre Hautreizwirkung beim Kaninchen [Test on primary skin irritation of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate in the rabbit]. International Bio-Research (IBR) Inc. Hannover, Germany, Unpublished report no. 1-3-436/1-77, on behalf of Röhm GmbH & Co. KG)
Eye irritation
No data is available for eye irritation of 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA).
Some concern for eye irritation of 6-CHMA is expected based on the similarity with short chain alkyl methacrylates and in particular with 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate CAS 688-84-6 (see document "Read -across hypothesis and justification" in section 13 of this IUCLID dossier). ). As reported in SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004), eye irritancy data in animals are variable but slight irritation was observed for all methacrylate esters . In particular, experimental data are available for the most similar short chain alkyl methacrylates 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (2-EHMA) CAS 688-84-6. In SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004) inside the specific section of 2 -EHMA two studies both with high reliability but with different results are reported:
1) 2-EHMA was not irritating in as study conducted in 1978 according to FDA, Draizen method (Ref. Sterner and Chibanguza, 1978, 2-Ethylhexyl methacrylate: Prüfung von „2-Äthylhexylmethacrylat“ im Augenreiztest am Kaninchen [Test on eye irritation of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate]. International Bio-Research (IBR), Inc., Hannover, Germany, Unpublished report no. 1-3-177-78 on behalf of Röhm GmbH & Co KG)
2) 2-EHMA was slightly irritating in as study conducted in 1981 according to EPA,FHSA method (Ref. Poole , 1981, Methacrylate de 2 Ethyl Hexyle (MAE2H) Irritation Studies in the Rabbit. ICLS Laboratories Ltd, England, Unpublished report No. CL81:46:2136 on behalf of Norsolor (Atofina)).
Based on all the other short chain alkyl methacrylates are slight irritant for eyes and based on precautionary principle for equivocal data regarding 2-EHMA 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate is expected to be slightly irritating for the eyes.
Respiratory irritation
No data is available for respiratory irritation of 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA). Some concern for respiratory irritation of 6-CHMA is expected based on the similarity with short chain alkyl methacrylates and in particular with 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate CAS 688-84-6 (see document "Read -across hypothesis and justification" in section 13 of this IUCLID dossier)
For three of four substances that belong to short chain alkyl methacrylates category a classification included in annex VI of the CLP Regulation (EC n. 1272/2008) is available.
- Ethyl methacrylate CAS 97-63-2: H225, H315, H317, H319, H335
- Isobutyl methacrylate CAS 97-86-9: H226, H315, H317, H319, H335, H400
- n-butyl methacrylate CAS 97-88-1: H226 H315, H317, H319, H335
The three substances above are respiratory irritating. 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA) has got a lower vapor pressure than the three substances above but based on precautionary principle the classification H335 (May cause respiratory irritation) is proposed for 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA) according to the CLP Regulation (EC n. 1272/2008).
Justification for classification or non-classification
No data is available for skin, eye and respiratory irritation of 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA) but some concern for irritation potential of 6-CHMA is expected based on the similarity with short chain alkyl methacrylates and in particular with 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate CAS 688-84-6 (see document "Read -across hypothesis and justification" in section 13 of this IUCLID dossier).
Based on the experimental data reported in SIDS Dossier of " Short chain alkyl methacrylates" approved at SIAM 18 (20-23 April 2004) for similar compounds and based on the classification included in annex VI of the CLP regulation for some of them, the classification H315 (Skin Irrit. cat.2), H319 (Eye Irrit. cat.2) and H335 (May cause respiratory irritation) is suggested for 6-chlorohexyl methacrylate (6-CHMA) according to the CLP Regulation (EC n. 1272/2008).
