Glycine has high water solubility (250 g/L) and a low potential for adsorption to organic soil and sediment particles (log Koc 0), thus the main compartment of concern for environmental distribution is the water phase. Nevertheless, Glycine is readily biodegradable; therefore it will rapidly be removed from natural water compartments as well as from wastewater in sewage treatment plants. The estimated half time for the reaction with OH-radicals is 13.7 hours (24h day; OH-concentration: 0.5E+06 OH/cm3) (AOPWIN v1.92). However, photodegradation is not an important environmental fate process since the substance is not expected to evaporate into the atmosphere due to its very low vapor pressure of < 0.0001 Pa (0.000000128 mm Hg) at 20 °C.

Furthermore, the substance has a very low value for log Kow (-3.21) and therefore bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms is not to be expected.
