Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced to biological treatment plants in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

An activated sludge respiration inhibition test according to OECD Guideline 209 was conducted under GLP. The EC50 was determined to be >1000 mg/L. This study is considered as the key study as it was conducted with activated sludge which reflects better to the real environmental situation compared to methods using bacterial pure cultures (see supporting study below).

In a bacterial oxygen consumption test according to German Industrial Standards DIN 38412, part 27, with Pseudomonas putida an EC50 > 10000 mg/L was determined. The study is considered as supporting study as bacterial pure cultures were being tested only.
