Principles of method if other than guideline:
The test was performed according to the German standard DIN 51794 and DIN EN 14522: Determination of ignition temperature of liquids. The test determines the lowest temperature at which a liquid or gaseous product ignites in contact with a hot surface. For that purpose, the amount of the test item and the temperature of the hot surface are varied. In this way, the lowest temperature rounded down with an accuracy of 5 °C is determined at which the test item ignites.

In this test a semi-automated apparatus (ZT3 (ZPA-3)) is used for the determination of the ignition temperature:
The test apparatus as described in DIN 51794 and DIN EN 14522 consists of a cylindrical resistance furnace ZPA-3 (Petrotest, operated with alternating current) equipped with a 200 mL Erlenmeyer flask as ignition chamber. A cylindrical opening is placed at the top of it to facilitate the loading of the test item into the ignition chamber. The temperature of the oven is measured inside the furnace at the wall of the Erlenmeyer flask 25 mm above the bottom using a thermocouple. The temperature control is performed via a control thermocouple located in a drilling hole within the oven.

An approximate value of the ignition temperature of the test item was first determined by the preliminary test.


In the preliminary test, an ignition was observed at a temperature of 332 °C.


Main test:


Regulation EC No. 440/2008 and DIN 51794: The auto-ignition temperature rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5 °C was determined as 315°C.


DIN EN 14522: The auto-ignition temperature reduced by 1.5 % and rounded to the nearest integer temperature was determined as 311 °C.

Conclusions:
The test item has an auto-ignition temperature of 315 °C.
Executive summary:

The auto-ignition temperature of the test item was determined, under GLP, according to the Regulation EC No. 440/2008 Method A.15. and the German Standards DIN 51794 (2003) and EN DIN 14522.


From the three test series, the lowest auto-ignition temperature was measured to be 316°C, at ca normal atmospheric pressure.


The retained AIT is 315°C, as corrected according to EU A15 and DIN51794 criteria, and 311°C, according to DIN14522.

It is noted here that according to ECHA guidance - Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment; chapter R. 7 A: Endpoint specific guidance, July 2017 - the auto-ignition temperature for liquids is not used directly for classification and labeling according to 'CLP' Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. However, it can be used in the chemical safety assessment in considering risks associated with processing the substance.


Nevertheless, according to DIN EN 13463-1 the test item has to be assigned to temperature class T2.
