Description of key information

FAT 40543/A, when applied at its maximum solubility to green algae (scenedesmus subspicatus) did not affect the algal growth or biomass. Therefore, the NOEC in this study on algae growth inhibition was the maximum solubility of the test substance (0.27 mg/L as determined).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.27 mg/L

Additional information

The influence of the test substance FAT 40543/A on the growth of the green algal species Scenedesmus subspicatus CHODAT was investigated in a 72-hour static test according to the Commission Directive 92/69/EEC, Annex Part C.3, dated December 29, 1992, and the OECD Guideline No. 201, adopted June 7, 1984. The test was performed in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice Regulations.

Due to the very low water solubility of the test substance a supersaturated stock suspension of the test substance with a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L was continuously stirred at room temperature in the dark over 96 hours. Then the stock suspension was filtered. The undiluted filtrate with the maximum concentration of dissolved respectively very fine dispersed test substance was used as the highest concentrated test medium. Additionally, the dilutions 1:2, 1:4, 1:8 and 1:16 of the filtrate and a control were tested.

The analytically determined test substance concentrations in the freshly prepared undiluted filtrate of the supersaturated stock suspension amounted to 0.37 mg/L. After 72 hours the concentrations of FAT 40543/A in this test medium had decreased to 0.16 mg/L. Therefore, all biological results are related to the mean measured test substance concentration of 0.27 mg test substance/L.

The test substance FAT40543/A had no inhibitory effect on the growth of Scenedesmus subspicatus after the exposure period of 72 hours up to and including the highest test concentration of in the mean 0.27 mg test substance/L. Thus, this test concentration was determined as the 72-hour NOEC (highest concentration tested without toxic effects after the test period of 72 hours). This concentration was the highest concentration of FAT 40543/A, which could be dissolved respectively very fine dispersed in the test water under the test conditions.

The 72-hour LOEC (lowest concentration tested with toxic effects), respectively the EC50 for the algal biomass b and the growth rate µ could not be quantified due to the absence of toxicity up to the highest test concentration. However, these parameters were clearly higher than 0.27 mg test substance/L.
