Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Numerous data are available on the toxicity of sodium chloride and calcium chloride towards aquatic organisms. The studies summarised in this dataset have focused on test results based on international guidelines and only key studies for both constituents of the reaction mass were selected. This dataset does not aim at giving a comprehensive review of the literature.

Available data support the fact that both constituents of the reaction mass display similar toxicity towards aquatic organisms. In addition, there is no strong difference in sensitivity among vertebrates (fish), invertebrates (Daphnia) and Algae and Cyanobacteria. This result is not surprising as both constituents are likely to exhibit toxicity to living organisms through their impact on osmotic pressure.

As no information was available (and required) for the reaction mass itself, a worst case approach was applied. For each endpoint, the lowest LC/EC50 or NOEC/EC10 among sodium chloride and calcium chloride was selected as reflecting the toxicity of the reaction mass.
