Description of key information

The 72-hour EC50 for the read-across substance heptanal was found to be 2.9 mg/L based on growth rate.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
2.9 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.92 mg/L

Additional information

Algal studies are available for the surrogate molecules heptanal and nonanal. Two studies are available for heptanal. In the first study (Ward et al.,2003a) the 72 -hour EC50 was determined to be 10.3 mg/L and the NOEC was found to be 3.31 mg/L based on growth rate. In the second study for heptanal (Gancet, 2010) the 72 -hour EC50 was determined to be 2.9 mg/L and the NOEC 0.92 mg/L based on growth rate inhibition.

A single study is available for nonanal (Ward et al. 2003b) where the 72 -hour EC50 was found to be 4.5 mg/L and the NOEC 1.79 mg/L based on growth rate.
