Description of key information

By way of read-across from its ionic constituents lactate and ammonium, short-term aquatic toxicity values for ammonium-S-lactate were determined for three trophic levels (fish, Daphnia and algae). The most sensitive species was the invertebrate Daphnia magna with an EC50 (48 h) of 203.3 mg/L.

Neither does ammonium-(S)-lactate exhibit significant chronic toxicity to aquatic organisms. According to effect values for the ammonium moiety as reported in published literature, fish appear to be the most sensitive species, with a lowest NOEC of 8.92 mg/L (converted to NH4-(S)-lactate).

Therefore, the target substance ammonium-(S)-lactate is not considered to be toxic to aquatic life. Classification as hazardous to aquatic life according to the EU CLP Regulation is not warranted based on available data.
