Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Toxicological information

Skin irritation / corrosion

Currently viewing:

Administrative data

Endpoint:
skin corrosion: in vitro / ex vivo
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
other information
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
accepted calculation method
Justification for type of information:
Phosphonic Acid EC 237-066-7; CAS 13598-36-2 has been identified as a relevant surrogate substance for read-across to the target substance. Phosphonic acid has a harmonised EU classification in Annex VI of CLP: Skin Corr 1A H314; Acute Oral Toxicity 4 H302.

It is proposed that the endpoint for skin corrosion be read across from the surrogate substance, using the pH and acid dissociation constant as relevant physical properties relating to skin corrosion. According to the Registration dossier for phosphonic acid, the dissociation constants for both that acid and phenylphosphonic acid have been determined in the following publications: Dissociation constants of certain phosphorous-containing acids in aliphatic alcohols; Kreshkov A (1966) Russian Journal of Physical Chemistry vol 40 no 9. Comparison of Acid strengths of Orthophosphoric acid, thioophosphoric acid, phenylphosphonic acid, and monophenyl Phosphate in aqueous Potassium Chloride solutions Makitie and Konttinen; Acta Chem Scand 23 (1969) No 4, 1459-1461.
Cross-reference
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
read-across source
Reference
Endpoint:
skin corrosion: in vitro / ex vivo
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a strong acid (pH ≤ 2.0) or base (pH ≥ 11.5) and the available information indicates that it should be classified as skin corrosion (Category 1, 1A, 1B or 1C)
Justification for type of information:
Dissociation constants pKa for phosphonic acid in water has been reported in literature 1,80 and 6,20 from Dissociation constants of certain phosphorous-containing acids in aliphatic alcohols; Kreshkov A (1966) Russian Journal of Physical Chemistry vol 40 no 9.
