A large data set of studies are available on magnesium carbonate and other magnesium salts, both laboratory studies using test animals and human data reported in the public domain. The toxicity profile of magnesium carbonate in birds can therefore be predicted from that reported in the mammalian studies.
Based on the essentiality of magnesium and the low toxicity of magnesium carbonate as demonstrated by the available mammalian dataset, as well as the ubiquitous nature of magnesium carbonate in the environment, avian toxicity testing is scientifically unjustified.
