Experimental results are available for the three trophic levels (fish, Daphnia and algae). Two reliable literature references are available which investigate the effects of magnesium chloride and magnesium chloride hexahydrate on fish and Daphnia, respectively. A reliable OECD guideline study is also available which assesses the toxicity of magnesium chloride hexahydrate to algae using a nominal test concentration of 100 mg/L. These studies can all be read across to magnesium carbonate and demonstrate that the concentration of magnesium carbonate that might cause acute toxicity exceeds the maximum solubility of magnesium carbonate in water. On this basis, magnesium carbonate is not acutely toxic to aquatic organisms and PNECs for the aquatic compartment have not been derived.
