Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A full dataset of three acute and three chronic studies is available, either on the substance itself or on its structural analogue AIBN.

In the acute fish study with AIBN according to OECD guideline 203 it was found that the 96h-LC50 for 2,2'-azobis[2-methylbutyronitrile] is greater than the maximum water solubility.

A static, 48-hour study in Daphnia magna with the test substance was performed according to OECD guideline 202. The 48-hour EC50 in Daphnia magna was 51.9 mg/L.

A 72-hour study with Selenastrum capricornutum with the test substance was performed according to OECD guideline 201. The 72-hour EC50 in Selenastrum capricornutum was 67 mg/L (measured initial) based on growth rate. The NOEC based on growth rate was 12.5 mg/L (measured initial).

A long-term fish study according to OECD 210 was performed to assess the chronic toxicity of the test item to Pimephales promelas. Pimephales promelas were exposed to a solution of the test item at a single nominal concentration of 10 mg/L for a period of 33 days. The geometric mean measured test concentrations were determined to be 8.3 mg/L and no effects were found on hatching, survival, weight or length, at this concentration. The NOEC is therefore ≥ 8.3 mg/L.

A semi-static study according to OECD 211 was performed to assess the chronic toxicity of the test item to Daphnia magna. Daphnia magna were exposed (10 replicates of a single daphnid per group) to a solution of the test item at a single nominal concentration of 10 mg/L for a period of 21 days. The geometric mean measured test concentrations were determined to be 8.4 mg/L and no effects were found at this concentration. The 21d-NOEC is therefore ≥ 8.4 mg/L.

A static, 3-hour respiration inhibition study in domestic activated sludge with 2,2‘-azobis(isobutyronitrile) was performed. The 3-hour NOEC and EC50 in activated sludge were >1000 mg/L, based on respiration rate. Converted to 2,2'-azobis[2-methylbutyronitrile] this value is 1171 mg/L.
